According to information, the Madibeng municipality currently owes Eskom over R400 million, and it may be just a matter of time before the supplier cuts the electricity supply to the Madibeng area.

In addition, Madibeng is reportedly in arrears with the City of Tswane, owing the metro over R111 million and Randwater over R12 million. (As on 31 Oct 2022)
The Eskom debt came to the forefront during a discussion over alternative energy resources at a council meeting when a council member remarked on the debt.
After repeated requests for comment, the Municipality said on Tuesday that it had not received a formal notice of intention to switch off from Eskom. It also did not elaborate on the amounts owed.
“The Municipality is currently engaging with Eskom on a revised payment plan that will enable the municipality to honour the debt. The meeting is scheduled for Friday, 02 December 2022, ” municipal spokesperson, Tumelo Tshabalala said.
