A persistent shortage in generation capacity may see the return of power cuts during peak evening hours.

Eskom warns that the power system is constrained for today and in the coming weeks due to a shortage in generation capacity.

The power utility says that although several generation units are expected to return to the grid today, the likelihood of load-shedding remains high and the shortage in capacity is likely to persist in coming weeks.

Should load-shedding be implemented, it will most likely be during evening peak hours (between 17:00 and 22:00) and at short notice.

Planned maintenance amounts to 5 232MW being out of service while another 14 623MW is unavailable due to unplanned breakdowns.

Eskom urges South Africans to help limit the impact of the shortage by reducing electricity usage and switching off non-essential items.
