Enoch Mpianzi

The family of the 13-year-old learner who drowned at a lodge near Brits in January while on a orientation camp, is suing the Gauteng department of education for R10 million.

Enock Mpianzi, a Grade 8 learner from Parktown Boys High School, drowned during the camp at Nyati Bush and River Break Lodge. His body was found on 17 January, two days after a raft he was on capsized.

At the time, teachers only realised he was missing a day after the incident and a search was initiated.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said on Monday afternoon that the department has “no appetite” to oppose the claim. “We have allowed our legal team to continue to engage with the legal firm representing the family, so that we use previous court cases that have ruled on matters such as this in nature as a barometer to determine an appropriate amount,” Lesufi said .
