Former Madibeng employee arrested for R30 million fraud

A 34 – year old former Madibeng Municipality employee was arrested by the Hawks’ Commercial Crime Investigation in Pretoria on Friday for alleged R30 million fraud.

The Brits Mall was defrauded of R30 million.

The arrest is linked to former Brits attorney Gerard Jacques du Plessis (55) who was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment in 2019 after he stole money from Brits Mall that was intended for municipal payments.

“Nkateko Mukhwana allegedly connived with du Plessis who was hired by the Brits Mall to handle municipal payments on behalf of the mall from February 2017. Instead of making the payments as agreed, du Plessis allegedly pocketed the money and supplied fictitious receipts to the manager of the mall,” said Hawks spokesperson Captain Tlangelani Rikhotso.

“The deceit by the accused came to light when one day the water and lights for the mall were suddenly switched off by the municipality. The matter was reported to the Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation and a thorough investigation was conducted.” He was arrested in February 2018 in Brits.

The former Madibeng employee appeared before the Pretoria Specialised Magistrate’s court on Monday, 14 February 2022 on 17 counts of fraud. He was released on R5 000 bail and the case was postponed to 30 March 2022 at the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Pretoria for further investigation.
