A mother and daughter were attacked by a group of armed men, shortly after the family has also survived an armed robbery.

A mother from the Melville township in KwaZulu-Natal is living in fear after her family first survived an armed robbery, and then three days later experienced the nightmare of her daughter being shot twice by gangsters and left for dead.

Bongiwe Nxele’s 13-year-old daughter Bayanda has spend the past two weeks in hospital after being shot on February 20.

“We were first held at gunpoint on February 16 and the robbers took everything in our house.

“While we were still processing that, a group of men appeared on the street and started shooting wildly.

“We were sitting outside our home at about 21:00 because of the heat, and had to dive for cover as the bullets started to fly around us,” said Nxele.

Her daughter was hit in her leg and was lying on the ground. The men came to her and told her to get up.

“When she said she could not because she was injured, they shot her again in her thigh and told her that if they returned and found her lying there, they would aim higher.”

Nxele said it was believed the shooters came from neighbouring township Ntshawini.

They had previously been banned from entering Melville.

KwaDukuza police spokesperson, Priya Nunkumar, said police were investigating the cases of armed robbery and attempted murder.
