A seven-year-old girl was kidnapped, brutally murdered and her half-naked body dumped in bushes at Letlhabile near Brits last Tuesday. Police arrested the ex-boyfriend (51) of the girl’s mother on Thursday, 24 June.
According to police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, little Keitumetse Tumelo was last seen getting off a taxi in Letlhabile on Tuesday. When she did not arrive home, her mother and neighbours searched for the girl but could not find her and the mother reported her disappearance to the police. “A missing person enquiry was registered on Tuesday night.” Funani said a thorough police investigation linked the ex-boyfriend to the girl’s disappearance and after being questioned by the police, he was arrested. He pointed out the crime scene to the police where Keitumetse’s half-naked body was found.
“She had sustained visible head wounds. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of the young girl’s death. An additional rape charge may be added to the charges after the post-mortem results. The investigation continues,” Funani said.
The suspect appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, on charges of kidnapping and murder.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, condemned the incident and conveyed condolences to the family. He instructed Letlhabile detectives to ensure that the suspect’s bail application is opposed.
