Hartbeespoort in the news, and not good news
Hartbeespoort has been featured in national news lately, and it is not positive news.
From warnings to avoid the Hartbeespoort Dam because of hyacinth, to complaints about well-known venues, and reports on lawlessness in Hartbeespoort, none of the publicity was positive.
A well-known radio talk show host’s experience at a popular golf resort was picked up by the media when she expressed her disgust on X (Twitter). Radio 702’s Relebogile Mabotja posted photos and a description of their “absolute filthy” accommodation at the golf estate. “Green pool, broken slide, broken villas and disgustingly filthy rooms and showers. This 4-star graded place needs to shut down and be reviewed. They are unhygienic, unkept and dangerous,” she posted.
Mabotja said they complained to management and a cleaner with cleaning products arrived to ‘clean’. Following media coverage of this, Mabotja was refunded by the resort and the establishment was allegedly taken off well-known tourist recommendation list.
Other complaints, made in national newspapers, were about lawlessness in Hartbeespoort and included bullying behaviour and people’s disregard for traffic laws at the dam wall.
And of course, boaters were warned in the national media to stay away from Hartbeespoort Dam after more than 30 boats were trapped in hyacinth and people had to be rescued by the NSRI.
To top this off, reports increased about sewage from other areas streaming into the dam via rivers. Magalies Water said this week it would appoint a service provider for the Crocodile catchment area to curb the problem at the source.
