Water and sanitation minister Senzo Mchunu mentioned Hartbeespoort Dam during an event to mark World Water Day on Tuesday.
Mchunu talked about the growing problem of water pollution and referred to the Hartbeespoort Dam and Vaal River.
He said the main source of pollution was from domestic wastewater treatment, which included malfunctioning of wastewater systems. He said the department has been investigating cases related to waste water systems due to complaints by the public.
According to Mchunu, enforcement action was taken by the department against municipalities that violate water legislation concerning treatment works. This includes administrative, civil and criminal actions.
He said the department was fast-tracking actions of the anti-pollution task team to address water quality pollution problems in South Africa.
