An innocent bystander was shot during a cash-in-transit heist in Brits on Friday morning.
According to an eyewitness, Johan du Toit of Protego Security, the robbers stormed a Fidelity security guard after he collected money from a funeral establishment in Spoorweg Street around 10:30. The Protego Security office is adjacent to the funeral establishment. “Four or five robbers have been waiting in a grey Volkswagen Polo near the establishment since 09:00 on Friday morning. The Fidelity cash vehicle arrived about 10:30 to pick up cash. As the security guard opened the safe to put the cash bag away, one of the robbers stormed him and grabbed the bag. The robbers sped away,” Du Toit said.
The Fidelity vehicle, as well as Protego Security vehicles, gave chase. Approximately a kilometre down the road, the Fidelity cash van rammed the robbers’ vehicle, causing it to crash into a Madibeng municipal vehicle. “The robbers fled on foot along the railway line. The Fidelity vehicle chased after them, but the driver lost control of the vehicle when he drove onto the railway line,” Du Toit said.
Shots were fired and a man was shot in the head. By the time of the publication it was not known if the wounded man survived. Kormorant is waiting for more information from the police.
