The Madibeng municipality has embarked on debt collection and is currently disconnecting the supply of electricity to clients whose municipal accounts are overdue. Residents and businesses in Hartbeespoort and Brits owe the municipality a staggering R170 million in overdue accounts.

The municipality has been cutting electricity supply in Hartbeespoort and Brits the past week to address outstanding municipal accounts in order to improve income revenue.
Municipal spokesperson, Tumelo Tshabalala said the total debt of households and businesses in Brits and Hartbeespoort is a whopping R170 636 666, and that does not include areas where the municipality collects rates only, for instance, secured residential complexes.
Businesses and households in Brits owe R79 575 869, while the Brits industrial area owes R78 020 027. Hartbeespoort’s debt stands at R13 040 770.
