The Madibeng Municipality has a week to settle its R129 million City of Tshwane debt before the lights are switched off in Hartbeespoort.

Madibeng purchased a generator for emergency outages at the Rietfontein wastewater plant.

The City of Tshwane (CoT) served Madibeng with a final notice last Thursday, informing the municipality that services would be disconnected in 14 days if the R129 million debt was not paid.
“The City of Tshwane has on 21 November 2024, served the Madibeng Local Municipality with final notices. As such, the city will disconnect services in the next 14 days if the accounts are still in arrears,” CoT spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said.
“The Madibeng Local Municipality owes the City of Tshwane a total outstanding amount of R129 Million for water and electricity on 31 October 2024. The last payment was made in August 2024.”
The electricity supply to the Rietfontein Waste Water Treatment Plant was already disconnected on 25 October because Madibeng Municipality failed to pay its R2.5 million arrears account. According to Madibeng spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala Madibeng had settled the Rietfontein Waste Water Treatment Works account, but “the City wants us to settle all other accounts.” Madibeng took the Rietfontein disconnection matter to court and Madibeng spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala said this week the application brought against CoT was successful. “The court ordered Tshwane to reconnect services at the Rietfontein Waste Water Treatment Works. The municipality has purchased a generator for the facility and it will be used during any emergency outages.”
