Madibeng vehicles now escorted for fear of hijacking

Madibeng employees who have to attend to urgent service delivery issues during the night are now being escorted by neighbourhood watch members and a security company because they are scared of hijacking.

The municipality’s fleet of vehicles is now being targeted by hijackers and car thieves.

This follows a recent hijacking of a Madibeng employee while driving in a municipal vehicle.

According to FF+ councillor, Elsa Lourens, Madibeng employees have been too scared to attend to urgent service delivery issues during nighttime since the incident.

“We could not allow this to interfere with urgent problems such as water pipe bursts, electricity faults etc. Afriforum neighbourhood watch members and Monitor Net Security offered to escort Madibeng employees to sites and keep them safe. I would like to thank Monitor Net and Afriforum for their assistance in this regard.”

Kormorant was informed that another vehicle was stolen the past week.

Kormorant asked the municipality a few weeks ago for information about the hijacking and possible measures to take to safeguard employees, but the municipality did not respond.
