Majakaneng activity club grows

The Tlasela Club in Majakaneng that was formed by a concerned community member to combat stress, domestic violence and other social issues, is growing and its members are increasingly taking part in physical activities.

The group of women, and a few men, who have been hiking up mountains and running distances, have recently taken part in their first aerobic marathon and even brought medals home. The group travelled to Sebokeng for the meet and they won a bronze medal.

The club was formed in February this year after resident, Pitso Mbewe, who has been coaching soccer to children in settlements in the Brits and Hartbeespoort areas in order to keep them off the streets and away from a life of crime and drugs, became aware of the social issues. He approached a couple of people and there was more interest than expected. The club opened with 35 members and their first activity was a hike up the Magaliesberg Mountain near the settlement. “The club members enjoyed it so much and we have had many hiking and running activities since. This was our first competition.”

Pitso has expressed his gratitude to all the sponsors that have made the trip possible.”Thank you, you know who you are.”

If anyone can assist with donations of used running shoes and T-shirts for the club, or for more information, please contact Pitso on 076 028 8683.
