Johannes Nicolaas Brits from Potchefstroom was shot around 01:00 when a number of armed robbers climbed through a window of the cottage at the ATKV Buffelspoort Holiday Resort. Brits, his wife Linda, together with his brother and sister and their spouses were on holiday at the resort.

According to reports, his sister was awake when the robbers gained entry through the window and she alerted the others. Brits was shot when he got out of bed.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Adele Myburgh, several shots were fired during the attack and the robbers fled with two cellphones and jewellery. There were presumably three robbers and they are still at large. The police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.
