A passerby alerted emergency services after hearing someone screaming for help.
A man was rescued from a storm water drain next to the N12 freeway Eastbound just before Voortrekker Road off-ramp in Alberton on Monday after being stuck for several hours.
The City of Ekurhuleni DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said the 56-year-old male patient was reported to be trapped inside the storm water drain system from yesterday evening at around 22:00.
“The incident was reported by a member of the public who according to him, heard someone screaming for help. On inspections following where the voice was coming from, he discovered the patient, he said.
Rescuers from Alberton were notified and responded swiftly to the scene.
“The patient was recovered from the storm water drain system exactly at 16:30 and he sustained a left leg fracture,” said Ntladi.
According to the patient, he couldn’t see the drain as it was too dark to see walking in tall grass.
