Over 2 000 destitute families in Schaumburg received large food parcels through a community-driven project on Tuesday.

“The food parcels contain enough food to last a family for about a month,” says Dr Nozipho Sangweni, who has been driving a sanitising project and now a feeding scheme in the informal settlement.

L Gromer Poultry donated all the food parcels which included maize meal, cooking oil, powder milk and chicken pieces amongst other things. Eagles Valley poultry supplied trucks for the parcels to be delivered.

“I cannot express my gratitude enough for L Gromer and Eagles Valley poultry for this huge contribution that will help thousands of hungry people who live in dire circumstances. And a heartfelt thank you to all other community members who rallied behind us for their donations to help keep this community safe,” Sangweni said.

A convoy of food trucks, accompanied by the police and the South African National Defense Force, arrived at a very quiet Schaumburg on Tuesday morning and the food was distributed door-to-door by community health workers.

In addition to the food parcels, Sangweni, through her non-profit company Umthommbo and other donors, has already distributed 1 000 masks to the elderly and vulnerable in the Schaumburg community. Thanks to Eagles Valley Poultry’s donations of fabric and wages for seamstresses, more masks are currently being made for the rest of the community.

“We are looking at another food drive in June if we can get more sponsors,” Sangweni said.
