According to a report, all the learners who passed away at Vyfhoek Primary in Potchefstroom, were girls.

The identities of the five learners who past away during the tragic truck accident at Vyfhoek Primary on August 18 have been released.

The North West Department of Education released a statement on Sunday detailing the names, ages and gender of the deceased.

According to the report all the learners who passed away were girls.

1. Tebogo Reamogetse Motsemme (12): Grade 5 (female)

2. Thando Noxolo Lewane (9): Grade 3 (Female)

3. Christina Lerato Mashai (9): Grade 3 (Female)

4. Orenele Seroalo (8): Grade 2 (Female)

5. Mahlohonolo Mapheto (Palesa Thekiso) (7): Grade 1 (Female)

The department also stated that one child was discharged from hospital on Friday. Three other learners are still admitted at the hospital.

The MEC for Education, Mmaphefo Matsemela highlighted that the memorial service will be held at Madiba Banquet Hall in Potchefstroom on Thursday, August 25 at 12:00.

Matsemela also indicated that a task team has been established to deal with the memorial service and the funeral arrangements.

“As a department we have established a task team which will deal with the memorial service and the funeral arrangements. This task team will work very closely with all the bereaved families.

“We are also working with other departments to ensure that psychosocial support is provided to all those who need it. Learners will receive psychosocial support from our sister departments at school on Monday”, indicated Matsemela.
