The Madibeng Municipality is currently busy replacing existing prepaid meters with split meters to ensure that all Madibeng clients can buy electricity after 24 November when the old meters will stop working due to the end of their life span.
Madibeng clients in Hartbeespoort received notices this week informing them that the municipality will be removing existing metering kiosks and old meters to install new meters. Only one meter will be installed per stand. If homeowners have flats of additional meters on the properties, it is the responsibility of the property owner to install sub-metering. It is the resident’s responsibility to make sure the home installation complies with SANS regulation 10142.
Current meters will not be able to take electricity tokens from 24 November. The current token identification is to be rolled out before this date.
The municipal team is currently working in Meerhof and residents will receive notice letters one to two weeks before installation. Technicians will need to enter the premises to disconnect the old meter and ensure continuity of the electrical supply. The new meter will be installed outside in a kiosk, with only the interface/keypad remaining inside for the resident’s use.
“If a resident cannot be available on the scheduled date, they can arrange for an alternative time. This procedure has been followed for all previous installations. Notices have already been issued for the Meerhof area, and we are working closely with caretakers to facilitate smooth installations,” Madibeng spokesperson Tumelo Tshabala said.
“All purchased electricity units should be entered into the old meter before the new one is installed. The remaining credits will be transferred to the new meter, provided there has been no tampering with the old meter. Any unexplained high credits without a verifiable purchase will not be transferred.”
According to Tshabalala, the municipality has only a few estates left to complete, including some larger properties and plots. “We have enough meters in stock to replace all required meters before November. We work closely with caretakers, especially in estates, to facilitate smooth operations and schedule installations after informing all residents.”
Residents are encouraged to ensure they have sufficient electricity before 21:00, as calls for assistance are cut off for safety reasons after this time unless there is a major outage affecting an entire block.
