A robber was shot and killed on the N4 highway near Brits on Thursday night after another spiking on this notorious road.
A couple was travelling towards Brits when they drove over rocks and spikes placed on the highway. They pulled over to investigate the damage and armed men appeared from the bushes along the highway and approached them. The man allegedly fired warning shots and the suspects fled.
The couple managed to drive a safe distance before they had to stop. Two tyres were damaged. During this time, another motorist saw the spikes and managed to avoid them. He came across the couple stranded on the side of the road and alerted security structures for assistance.
The police and Monitor Net Security rushed to the scene to assist the victims. “The police reacted immediately. We moved back to the spiking scene and found rocks and spikes on the road. About 600m away from the scene, we discovered the body of a suspect,” Johan Brits of Monitor Net said.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone confirmed the incident, saying an inquest docket was opened for investigation. “Reportedly, the victims were driving towards the Brits Plaza along the N4 road when the tyres of their Range Rover were punctured by spikes placed on the road. After stopping, the victims were approached by a yet-to-be-confirmed number of suspects. In the process, one of the suspects was allegedly shot and the suspects fled the scene. A preliminary crime scene investigation led to the discovery of a body in nearby bushes. Investigation into the matter is underway,” he said.
Last week another suspect was caught and arrested following a robbery near the Brits toll plaza. Robbers have terrorised motorists in this area of the N4 highway for the past year. During this time at least three motorists were killed.
The police in conjunction, with various security structures such as Afriforum Neighbourhood Watch and security companies in the Brits area, have increased operations in the area to curb the attacks.
“We commend the police and all the safety structures for their speedy and proactive response to these incidents in attempts to curb robberies on the N4,” Brits said.
