New sub-acute rehabilitation hospital opens in Brits

A sub-acute rehabilitation hospital, the first of its kind in the Bojanala district, opened its door in Brits recently, offering rehabilitation care for patients requiring a longer recovery period.

Brits Sub-Acute hospital is a step-down facility where patients released from the hospital will be cared for in a controlled environment with 24-hour nursing care. It offers a comprehensive inpatient programme for patients who have suffered an acute event as a result of an illness, injury or disease, and is covered by medical aids.

This facility will provide services to patients in Brits, Hartbeespoort and Rustenburg who previously had to travel to Pretoria or Johannesburg for such services.

According to Truidie van Schalkwyk, manager of the new hospital, the sub-acute hospital was established due to a demand in the area. “The Eugene Marais Hospital in Pretoria is the closest step-down facility. “We will be servicing a large area in North West. We received our first patient on opening day on 13 June and had already admitted four more since then. This is a clear indication of the need that exists for such a facility,” she says.

The sub-acute hospital is located at the Brits Rusoord in Kerk Street in Brits in a separate section. Currently, one floor has been renovated and upgraded to house 12 patients. Work is underway on three more floors that will eventually accommodate 40 patients.

“Rehabilitation care along with our on-call physicians who work closely with each patient will ensure that patients get the best results possible for a faster recovery. Our medication management, wound care and respiratory care are of the best around.”

Sub-acute facilities merge the technology of a hospital with skilled nursing but do not have theatres or high-intensity wards, resulting in more cost-effective services whilst maintaining the quality of care. Brits Sub-acute offers a cost-effective alternative for patients requiring longer recovery periods.

The hospital offers services such as neurological rehabilitation due to brain injury, head trauma and stroke, orthopaedic rehabilitation, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and specialised care such as transfusions, dialysis, palliative care, post-operative care, wound care and post-Covid care, to name but a few.

“We have full-time qualified nursing professionals and on-call physicians and therapists who work closely with each patient to ensure the best results possible and a faster recovery.”
