An estimated 200 cubic metre sewage sludge was allegedly dumped in a hole and buried at the Rietfontein wastewater treatment plant last week.

Sewage sludge was dumped into a hole and covered up at the Rietfontein wastewater treatment plant.

According to residents close to the plant, a huge hole was excavated and the sludge dams were emptied into the cavity before it was closed up. A resident took photos with a drone before it was closed up.

This can result in groundwater in the area being severely contaminated. The plant is currently being refurbished.

The municipality did not respond to Kormorant’s enquiry and concern about the incident. The situation has been reported to the Department of Water and Sanitation. According to DA water and sanitation shadow minister, Leon Basson, the incident has been reported to the director-general of the department and an urgent investigation will follow.
