Hundreds of residents in the Refentse settlement are cooped up in their homes while sewage is running among the houses as a result of an overflowing sewage manhole.

“We cannot live like this. We are told by the government to practice extreme hygiene during the Covid-19 outbreak, but we live with sewage on our doorstep,” a resident told Kormorant. “The smell is something terrible.”

The current sewage problem has been ongoing for months and despite the residents’, and Kormorant’s request to the Madbeng municipality to urgently address the problem, nothing has been done.

Streams of sewage surrounds homes and runs from the settlement into Van der Hoff road.

Kormorant has sent yet another enquiry to the municipality and has not received a response by the time of going to press.
