Shocking Madibeng water accounts – some see 700% increase

In a time where most people face unknown financial difficulty during the Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown, residents in Hartbeespoort and Brits received another unexpected shock when they received their May municipal accounts.

Charges for water consumption have doubled and tripled, and in some cases consumers’ bills increased with a whopping 700%.

Selwyn Kerr from Hartbeespoort saw a 700% rise in water consumption and René van Vuuren received a whopping bill of R18 738 just for water consumption from April to May.

Sonja Steyn’s water bill increased from R1 706 to R6 564 in May, and Anel Griessel’s from R497 in April to R2 403 in May. “And at the same time, my neighbours received a bill with a zero charge for water consumption. Something is seriously wrong,” she said.

These are only a few examples of a large number of complaints Kormorant received the past week.

Consumers say they get no assistance from Madibeng upon enquiring about their exorbitant accounts.

Kormorant approached the Madibeng municipality for clarity on the confusing accounts last week. After repeated requests for a response, the municipality finally said on Tuesday that it advises the affected consumers to contact the Revenue Management Division to lodge complaints.

“The municipality would then investigate individual cases and correct where necessary,’ said Tumelo Tshabalala, spokesperson for the municipality.

He advised that consumers contact Herman Mothiana on 012 318 9475 or through email hermanmothiana@madibeng.gov.za, or alternatively, Trevor Ramaru on 012 318 9138 or trevorramamaru@madibeng.gov.za.
