Suspect shoots himself in the head while trying to shoot police

A suspect shot himself in the head when he tried to shoot police in Hartbeespoort on Sunday morning.

Four suspects stopped near the Hartbeespoort police station in Scott Street in Schoemansville around 02:30 on Sunday morning and when a police vehicle pulled up alongside them, a shot was fired. The driver and a passenger jumped out and ran away and police found the bleeding man and another passenger in the car. They were both arrested.

“The man was trying to shoot the police when he allegedly shot himself,” police spokesperson, Colonel Amanda Funani said. “The wounded man was taken to hospital and is under police guard.”
The police found a firearm and housebreaking equipment in the car.

“We are investigating two cases of attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition,” Funani said.
