Residents in an informal settlement north of Brits could not believe their eyes on Wednesday when a leopard wandered into the settlement.

Residents of the Klipgat settlement noticed the leopard wandering the streets and then into yards at the property. Needless to say, the unusual visitor caused a frantic stir and the police were called. Residents were quick to share video footage of the leopard on Twitter.

The assistance of the SPCA was called in and the leopard was found hiding under a vehicle. It was darted and taken to an animal health facility. It is believed that the leopard had escaped from a nearby national game reserve.

Rekord North reports that the SPCA has launched an investigation to determine how the leopard escaped from the reserve and it would be returned to the nature reserve after the investigation.
