The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management has embarked on a visit to all North West towns to ensure compliance to COVID-19 regulations. MEC Sello Lehari is visiting shopping centres and taxi ranks to monitor compliance.

The MEC’s visits started in Zeerust on Monday where he closed a large retail store for failing to adhere to regulations. A number of people who were queueing to enter were not practicing social distancing. He said there were no COVID-19 compliance signs at the entrance to the shop and the retail store was not complying with the number of people allowed inside the shop.

“The State President has just addressed the nation and pleaded to all of us to comply. His message was very clear and specific to compliance especially on non-gathering and the number of people allowed indoors and outdoors.”

He said the management of retail stores and shops must know their shop capacity and determine the number of clients allowed to enter.

The MEC raised serious concern about the general behaviour of people and adherence to COVID-19 regulations.

“It concerns me when even big retail stores don’t ensure that they put measures in place. COVID-19 still exists and people must comply without being reminded because this is about every citizen’s life,” Lehari said.
He will be visiting towns all over the North West.
