Two college students drowned in the swimming pool of a hotel and spa in Hartbeespoort on Tuesday night.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the girl (19) and man (21) drowned between 20:00 and 21:00 in the pool at the hotel in Broederstroom. “The pair were part of a group of 23 students from Mogwase Orbit Leadership College that attended a field training programme with Orbit College in Rustenburg. The pair allegedly left the bar area at about 20:00 and went to the swimming pool. A security guard discovered both victims’ lifeless bodies at about 21:00 in the swimming pool,” he said.
Arthur Crewe of SRU High-Risk Unit said they received an emergency call from the venue shortly before 21:00. “We rushed to the scene and alerted the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and the Hartbeespoort Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). Upon arrival, the two students had already been taken out of the pool and we administered CPR until the ambulance and paramedics arrived. Paramedics continued with attempts to revive them, but despite all efforts, they were unfortunately declared dead on the scene,” Crewe said.
Mokgwabone said an inquest was registered at the Hartbeespoort police following the drownings.
