The robbers’ vehicle burst into flames.

A cash-in-transit vehicle was blown up and security guards shot at during a cash-in-transit heist near Brits on Monday morning.

Robbers in a Mahindra bakkie crashed into the armoured security vehicle around 08:45 at the Letlhabile/Brits intersection while it was on its way to a shopping centre. The bakkie burst into flames from the impact.

According to Colonel Brenda Muridili, spokesperson for the police, the group of robbers started shooting at the security vehicle and the guards were ordered to get out of the vehicle. The robbers used explosives to bomb the armoured van and then fled with an undisclosed amount of money, allegedly in two BMW cars.

“No injuries have been reported and no arrests made yet,” Muridili said.

“We are appealing to anyone with information to call the SAPS Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or to send tip-offs on the MySaps App.”
