One of the most notorious hijackers who operated around Mmakau, Klipgat and Akasia the past year, was arrested last week.

Mukoni John Baloyi (31) was arrested in Winterveldt by Mmakau detectives and the Brits Trio Crimes Task Team after thorough investigation the past months.

This follows the discovery of a man’s body on the R513 in De Wildt in July after he was allegedly hijacked and shot dead by Baloyi. The victim’s cellphone was allegedly found in Baloyi’s possession during his arrest.

“During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle which was positively linked to a car hijacking committed last month in Akasia. He was further found in possession of an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and a cellphone belonging to one of the car hijackings victim,” Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, spokesperson for the police said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was wanted for five car hijackings around Mmakau between August 2019 and June 2020. He has also been linked to two armed robberies in Klipgat in July and August 2020.
Baloyi appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 20 August, on three charges of carjacking and one of murder. He was remanded in custody and will be appearing before the same court on Friday, 28 August, for application of a legal representative.
