Another three learners, also hit by the bus, were injured. One is still in hospital.
According to the Gauteng Department of Education, chaos broke out at the school when four boys allegedly entered the school property through a fence at the back of the school.
“It was reported that the intruders started a fight with Grade 12 learners who were on their way home after examinations. As the altercation intensified, more learners became unruly and joined the commotion. Educators intervened and attempted to restore order by directing learners towards the buses,” said spokesperson Steve Mabona.
He said the situation escalated further in the bus area, and some learners tried to take control of the buses forcefully.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, a bus driver was assaulted and hit over the head. “Fearing for his safety, he drove off and in the process, four learners were struck by the bus.”
The injured learners were transported to a hospital by emergency services. A matric girl succumbed to her injuries at George Mukhari Hospital on Sunday.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident.
“Cases of manslaughter and grievious bodily harm, assault are being investigated,” Myburg said.
The education department said it will work closely with law enforcement to ensure appropriate action is taken against those responsible for instigating the violence.
Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his condolences, saying the department was “deeply saddened” by the death. “It is saddening that such a chaotic outburst led to the death of a pupil who had completed her exams. We condemn the unscrupulous individuals who instigated the unfortunate event.”
Schaumburg residents met with the department this week to discuss the way forward.
