International Vulture Awareness Day at vulture restaurant
International Vulture Awareness Day was celebrated by the Rotary Club of Brits Hartbeespoort and Birdlife Harties at the Nyoka Ridge Vulture Restaurant in Hartbeespoort.
International Vulture Awareness Day shines a spotlight on the highly important yet vastly misunderstood birds – vultures.
Most of our Southern African vultures are listed as critically endangered and in need of more urgent interventions.
Organised by WESSA Northern areas, the Rotary Club of Brits Hartbeespoort and Birdlife Harties joined other wildlife organisations worldwide on Saturday to raise awareness of these birds.
Speakers at the event were Dr John Ledger and John Wesson. John Ledger gave a detailed account of the Cape Vultures and his work on them since the 1960s when the first official vulture study group was formed. John Wesson gave a detailed account of vultures worldwide focusing on Southern African “Old World” vultures.
Attendees were not disappointed by the close to 300 vultures that came to feed and spectacular flypasts.
