Update: One dead, five wounded when robbers hit Broederstroom fuel station
A man was killed and five people were wounded when a large group of robbers hit a fuel station in Broederstroom, bombed an ATM and shot at security vehicles and civilians early on Wednesday morning. One of the robbers was also killed in a shootout.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Adele Myburgh, two security officers in two vehicles, and three civilian people in a car were wounded when the robbers opened fire. A man in the car died.
Security officers responded shortly after midnight when three explosions were heard coming from the Shell fuel station on the R512 in Broederstroom. A team of SRU High Risk Security officers was approximately 500m from the fuel station when they hit an ambush. An unknown number of gunmen opened fire on the vehicles. “All our vehicles were hit repeatedly. We returned fire. Three bullets hit me and we could not continue to the scene of the ATM bombing,” said Arthur Crewe, of SRU on Wednesday morning while waiting to be operated on in a hospital in Brits. Aequitas Security rushed to assist after SRU called for backup.
According to Myburgh, five armed suspects, wearing balaclavas stormed the fuel station at 00:05 ordering two fuel attendants and a security guard to lie on the ground. “They were robbed of their cellphones and while being held at gunpoint, they heard explosions. Another three suspects joined the other five. “They had blown up one ATM, but could not blow up a second,” she said.
The suspects then attempted to open the drop safe with explosives, but were unsuccessful, and proceeded to rob the fuel station store. “While ransacking the kiosk, they heard shots from the road and ran out.”
The robbers opened fire on security vehicles. “A security officer from SRU and one from TSS Security were hit. Passers-by in a car also came under fire and bullets hit all three passengers. They continued driving to a parking lot and the man was found dead and the other two people each sustained three gunshot wounds to the chest,” Myburgh said.
A drone was used to look for the suspects and a deceased robber was found along Lanseria Road. “He was found with ice cream and cigarettes from the kiosk, as well as a cocked 99mm pistol.”
A second suspect was found and arrested in the bush near the scene later on Wednesday morning. “He is an illegal Mozambique immigrant, approximately 30 years old. The police request the community’s assistance in locating the rest of the suspects. Anyone with information is urged to contact the investigating officer Col Kgosi Dihemo at 082 773 0630.”
