Brits police’s Social Crime Prevention Unit, led by Lieutenant Colonel Johan Naude, last week embarked on a door-to-door campaign to curb gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide.
The team was accompanied by the police’s district communication unit, Brits Community Police Forum, Community in Blue and the Department of Health. The campaign aimed to raise awareness of gender-based violence and femicide offences such as assault, rape and murder. “Women mostly fall prey to and become victims at the hands of male perpetrators who they have a relationship with,” said spokesperson Maria Nkabinde.
“Male victims were urged to come forward and break the silence by reporting incidents of GBV to the police. Lieutenant Colonel Naude emphasised that the police are mandated by the constitution to create a safe and secure environment for all citizens and victims of GBV and femicide.”
