Reason for strange underground ‘rumblings’ in Hartbeespoort discovered
Many residents on the northern side of the dam have reported strange underground ‘rumblings’ over the past weeks.

Some speculated that it might be illegal mining. However, suspicions have arisen that the noise may be the result of methane gas in the sewer line.
“We have had several complaints about sewage leaks and underground tremors, especially in the areas of Hartmark, La Camargue and Serene estates, as well as Ifafi and other parts. It was reported to the Madibeng Municipality and a technician told me that they couldn’t weld to fix pipes because of methane gas risks,” said Madibeng councillor Gullaume Clouston. “The methane gas leaks could have disastrous consequences and could also be the cause of the underground tremors people feel.”
Madibeng Municipality spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala said this week that the ‘explosions’ were caused by a faulty air release valve, and it has since been replaced.
Sewage spills have increased in Meerhof. According to Clouston, a sewage leak near La Camargue and Serene Estates has caused sewage to run underneath the boundary walls. “At Meerhof School, parts of the school grounds are flooded with sewage. I have sent a detailed report to Madibeng. The municipality indicated last year that it had secured funding for a project to restore and replace all 14 pumps in the Hartbeespoort area.”
Kormorant reported in November 2024 that Madibeng Municipality spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala said a project had been approved to refurbish pump stations in Madibeng through the Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Grant.
“Of these, 12 are in Hartbeespoort, eight in Brits and two in Letlhabile. Project designs have been done, and a report will be submitted to the municipality soon.” He said that the project construction was expected to start in November, and the work would include, among others, the installation of new electrical panels, a telemetry system to allow remote management and spare pumps at each station,” Tshabalala said.
Kormorant is waiting for the municipality’s response.
