Hyacinth, salvinia coverage only 5% of Hartbeespoort Dam
According to the latest statistics of the Centre for Biological Control (CBC) of Rhodes University, hyacinth and salvinia currently only cover about 5.8% of Hartbeespoort Dam. Hyacinth coverage is 0.7% (12ha) and salvinia 5.1% (94ha). The salvinia weevil was released for the first time in South Africa at the Crocodile River inlet to Hartbeespoort Dam for the first time a few months ago. Currently, the weevils are restricted to a small release site. They have established, but the numbers are still very low. We are bringing in a new batch from the USA in July, and we are hoping to get them breeding quickly,” said Professor Julie Coetzee of the CBC.
