Midrand sewage spills threaten Hartbeespoort Dam

Sewage spills at Glen Austin end up in Hartbeespoort Dam.

The Glen Austin Conservancy (GAC) has expressed its concern about the current sewage overflow in the Midrand area, saying it will all end up in Hartbeespoort Dam.
“There’s a big clean-up operation going on at Harties – it will be pointless if fresh sewage arrives daily,” Dave Allanby, chairman of GAC said.
Allanby said if nothing is being done about the sewer, the suburb will be covered in sewage, the Midrand Reporter reported.
He said what was worse was that because the spill was downstream, it all ended up in Hartbeespoort Dam.
“If this situation continues, the entire area will become a ‘shitty’ mess flowing through all the suburbs to the Magaliesberg. This needs to be addressed at the highest level and not just shifted around from one department to another.
He said the root cause of this problem lies with the City’s Planning and Regulatory Enforcement Authorities who are both approving and turning a blind eye to development taking place without any upgrades to the current inadequate infrastructure.
In the meantime Magalies Water is busy with a R77 million project to clean the dam. One of the focus areas is the Crocodile catchment and pollution upriver from the dam. (Original story Midrand Reporter)
