Dog mom, babies saved from stormwater drain

A dog and her nine puppies were saved from sure death when an inspector of the Hartbeespoort Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) extracted them from a stormwater drain recently.
The emaciated mommy dog was spotted by a member of the public near Hornsnek and HAWS was contacted. “I saw she was lactating and started looking for puppies. I found nine puppies among the rubbish in a nearby stormwater drain,” HAWS inspector Stanford Wasarireuhu said.
Stanford had to climb into the stormwater drain to reach the puppies, from where he passed them on to the member of the public who had called HAWS for help.
“Their eyes were still closed and they were only about two weeks old.” Mom and her pups are now safe in the HAWS shelter.
“She has gained weight and we feed her lots of special food to ensure she can feed all the pups.”
The puppies will soon be up for adoption. Thank you Stanford!
