Hartbeespoort athlete Warren Schmelzer (left) with Hartbeespoort Athletic Club coach Koos Pansegrouw after he won two gold medals during the World Masters Athletic Championships in Sweden. He was a standout in the Masters 70-74 category. On day one, he struck gold in the steeplechase, defeating national champions and record holders. His victory set a new South African and African record.
Warren’s triumph continued in the highly competitive 800m event, featuring 62 athletes from 56 countries. Trained by coach Koos Pansegrouw, Schmelzer won his heats and advanced to a thrilling final during which he surged ahead in the last 120 meters, securing his second gold and another South African and African record.
