MCS swimmers dominate at Lifesaving SA Openwater Championships
The star swimmers are in front, Liam Tucker, Tobias Olivier, Lerato Molobey, middle, Hailey Blewett, Tlotliso Rakabutu, Tshepi Pebane, Maria Vicente dos Santos, and back, Liam van Wyk, Christiaan Bothma, Christiaan van Eeden and Nicola Olivier.
The 2024 Lifesaving South Africa Open Water Championships concluded this week with The Mountain Cambridge School together with Harties Reflections showcasing an outstanding performance, clinching the overall team victory in both the Nippers and Juniors categories.
The event saw young athletes from across the country compete in a series of gruelling water-based challenges.
In the Nippers category, Taliyah Eveleigh made notable strides in the u/11 female category, securing a commendable fourth place in all her events. Aden Prinsloo displayed resilience in the u/11 male division, with his best performance in the Run/Swim/Run event, landing him in fifth place overall.
Tlotliso Rakubutu shone brightly in the u/13 female category, earning silver medals in the Iron Nipper, Open Water Swim, and Run/Swim/Run events, and a bronze in the Board Race. Her stellar performance secured her a second-place finish overall. Tshepahalo Pebane made waves in the u/13 male group, achieving third place overall with a mix of podium finishes, including a silver in the Run/Swim/Run and a bronze in the Iron Nipper event.
The u/14 category was fiercely contested, with Tobias Olivier and Liam Tucker both clinching first place in the male division. Olivier’s gold medals in the Board Race and Iron Nipper events, along with silver and bronze finishes. Tucker mirrored this success, leading in the Open Water Swim and Run/Swim/Run.
In the junior category, the competition was equally intense. Maria Vicente Dos Santos stood out in the u/17 female division, securing third place overall with a consistent string of bronze medals and a gold in the Junior Female Rescue Tube Rescue. Christiaan Bothma and Liam van Wyk battled closely in the u/17 male category, with Bothma securing second place overall thanks to his consistent performances across board races, Iron Man, and swim events.
The Mountain Cambridge School and Harties Reflections’ success was not just in individual brilliance but also in team efforts, as evidenced by their victories in the Junior Female and Male Taplin Relay events, further solidifying MCS swimmers’ dominance in the championship.
