Nicola received the Top in South Africa award from Cambridge International for four Cambridge Outstanding Learner Awards in four of her seven subjects. She boasted impressive scores of 99% and 98% in biology, chemistry, accounting and mathematics in the November 2024 examination series. These exams are written internationally in 170 countries worldwide.
“I didn’t aim to be a top learner, I just did my work. I work hard consistently, and I concentrate on having a positive mindset. That is just what I have done throughout my school years,” says Nicola. “It was a huge surprise. I did not expect it at all, but it was great to see that my hard work had paid off.”
To Nicola, her academic studies are a priority. She admits she is somewhat of a perfectionist. “I have to be on top of things all the time. Since I was small, I wanted to understand everything. I would ask questions until I understood. But I do believe in balance in life, my parents make sure of it. They would tell me to go for a run or play piano. Without them, I would not have been able to achieve what I have. My mom is my biggest motivator when I am demotivated, and my dad is the one who makes me see things in perspective when I perceive things worse than they are. He is also the one who would give me a hug and go running with me. I am so thankful for such supportive parents.” Her father is a medical doctor, and her mother is an anaesthesiologist, and Nicola plans to follow in their footsteps.
“My plan is to study medicine at the University of Pretoria after school. At this stage, I am not considering studying abroad. I am thinking of specialising in pathology or anaesthesiology, but I will see after I graduate as a doctor.”
She has the highest praise for The Mountain Cambridge School. “It is my second home. The teachers are unique, they build you up, there is no negativity, and they go out of their way to ensure learners get a high-quality education. I love my school, I even think of it when I am at home,” she laughed.
Nicola is also a talented piano player and is currently busy with her Grade 8 Unisa music studies. She runs cross-country, loves reading, Lego and nature. “We love spending time on a game farm in Modimolle and other reserves.”
How does she feel about the future after receiving this prestigious award? “I am a bit nervous… I feel I have to keep to this standard. There are many expectations. All I can do is continue to give my all and do the best I can.”
