Pecanwood College staff trained in snake handling
In a proactive step towards improving campus safety and fostering environmental awareness, Pecanwood College recently hosted a Level 1 Snake Awareness, First Aid for Snakebite, and Venomous Snake Handling Course.

The Pecanwood College team with representatives of the African Snakebite Institute.
The training was facilitated by the African Snakebite Institute, a leading organisation in snake awareness and snake handling training. Sixteen staff members participated in the course, gaining essential knowledge and hands-on experience in safely managing snake encounters.
The course covered key aspects such as identifying different snake species, safely capturing and relocating snakes using the correct equipment, and providing basic first aid in the event of a snakebite. A significant focus of the training was on changing perceptions about snakes—encouraging safe relocation rather than unnecessary killing. Snakes play a crucial role in the ecosystem, particularly in controlling rodent populations, and educating communities about their importance can help protect both people and wildlife.
This initiative aligns with Pecanwood College’s campus theme of environmental responsibility and education. By equipping staff with these specialised skills, the school aims to create a safer environment for learners while also contributing to conservation efforts. Trained staff members will now be able to educate learners and the broader community, helping to dispel myths about snakes and promote responsible wildlife interaction.
Pecanwood College’s commitment to safety and sustainability sets an example for other educational institutions looking to balance human safety with environmental conservation. This training ensures that the campus remains a safe and informed space where coexistence with nature is not just encouraged but actively practised.
