During preparations for the Hartbeespoort Animal Welfare Society (HAWS) Spring Day and the launch of their new upgraded shelter, one of the animal carers unexpectedly turned into an artist.
Sam Hakuziwi (20) offered his help to well-known Hartbeespoort artist Elsabé Pienaar who was painting murals at the shelter. “He said he had some time and would love to help paint the murals. I asked him to paint the backgrounds and when he was finished he asked if he could also paint a picture,” Elsabé said. “And he did! I was surprised. There were the minimum finishing touches to do.”
Sam, who has worked at HAWS for the past year told Kormorant he had no painting experience. ‘I watched them work for days and I liked it. I also wanted to paint. I was really happy when Elsabé said I could help. I really enjoyed it.”
Sam applied for work at HAWS as a result of his love of dogs. “I have two dogs of my own and it feels good to help these animals.”
He now plans to continue painting. “Whenever I get hold of paint, I will practice. Maybe I will do other walls at HAWS.”
Please support HAWS on Sunday, 1 September, at the Spring Day Kennel Open Day to see their newly revamped shelter. Bring pet food and come and spend some time with the animals at the shelter.
