Beloved HAWS chairperson passes away
The beloved chairperson of the Hartbeespoort Animal Welfare Society (HAWS), Linda Spencer-Coye, sadly passed away on Sunday, 18 February after a long battle with cancer.
Linda has been the leader and backbone of HAWS for the past 16 years. Her devotion to her mammoth task as chairperson of the organisation and her dedication to animal welfare were qualities admired by everyone.
In a public post, the HAWS team this week expressed their loss:
“It is with the deepest sadness that we must announce the passing of our leader, mentor, animal warrior and friend. Linda joined HAWS in 2008 shortly after HAWS moved to its current location. Over the years she has taken HAWS from strength to strength to make it what it is today. Her dedication to the alleviation of the suffering of unwanted, lost and abandoned animals was her absolute passion. She set many goals and doggedly went about doing whatever she could to achieve them. She still had many dreams, plans and projects for HAWS but sadly she ran out of time. The HAWS team and volunteers will miss her terribly but will honour her memory by continuing to follow in her footsteps and do the best we can for the animals that come into our care. Our sincerest condolences to her daughter Amy, her family and friends and also the many members of our community who have been touched by Linda’s compassion for the animals of our area,” the HAWS team said.
“Goodbye to our dearest friend. May flights of furry angels sing you to your rest.”
Linda leaves behind her daughter Amy, mom and dad, two brothers and a sister.
A memorial service for Linda will be held on Friday, 1 March, at 11:00 at Harties Methodist Church.
