The body of a missing fisherman was found by police divers in Hartbeespoort Dam on Christmas Day.
According to Arthur Crewe of Hartbeespoort NSRI, the fisherman went missing on Tuesday afternoon after his canoe capsized near Kosmos. “We received a call from a member of the public at 16:14 who saw the canoe capsizing in the hyacinth. The fisherman did not surface and a distress call was made to the NSRI. When we arrived at the scene the canoe was also gone. After an extensive search, we could not find the fisherman, believed to be from Malawi. We had to remove fishing nets that got stuck in our boats’ propellers as we searched. We alerted the police’s Water Wing. The search continued until Tuesday night.”
Police divers took over the scene on Christmas morning, assisted by NSRI Hartbeespoort and SRU. Police divers located and recovered the body.
The man’s identity is not known at this stage.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
