Community members hunt for snares

Community members hunt for snares in the Magaliesberg.

A group of concerned community members recently ascended the Magaliesberg in Kameeldrift and Hartbeespoort in a snare hunt.
“Wildlife and pets have died horrible deaths over the past years as a result of snares. In conjunction with the Magalies Bewarea Conservancy, police, Hercules Community Police Forum, KaiNav Conservation, and The Snare Removal Project, we recently joined forces to address this serious issue affecting our area,” said Elize Pieterse, chairperson of the Maglies Bewarea Conservancy.
The team’s mission is to remove snares that have been killing wildlife and pets. “This heart-breaking situation has persisted for years, making snare removal an ongoing and urgent priority for our community’s conservation efforts. Educating the group about snares, including how to identify them and what to look out for was crucial in helping the team effectively locate and safely remove the snares.”
The team collected data and documented findings with photos to raise awareness about the severity of the issue. “The collaboration and positive participation of everyone involved was truly inspiring. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every volunteer who contributed to this successful initiative over the years. We hope that this spirit of awareness and positive action continues to grow in our community. Thank you for your support and dedication to making our area a safer place for all.”
