Hartbeespoort – Young man drowns in tragic accident
A young man (20) from Hartbeespoort drowned in a tragic accident at Hartbeespoort Dam on Saturday.
Callie Erasmus was with friends at the dam wall early on Saturday when he drowned.
According to police spokesperson Constable Ben Moabi, Callie Erasmus drowned in an irrigation canal below the Hartbeespoort dam wall. “The body was recovered by North West police divers who responded to the scene. It is reported that the area where the deceased allegedly fell through was damaged and was restricted to the public except for water and sanitation personnel.”
According to Arthur Crewe of SRU Strategic Response Rescue Unit, SRU received an alert of a drowning at the Hartbeespoort Dam wall in the early hours of Saturday.
“We responded to the scene and police divers and rescue workers recovered the body around 07:30,” he said.
“An inquest was registered at Hartbeespoort police station following the discovery of the body. Police are investigating the matter and anyone with information can contact Detective Sergeant Obrey Nthite on 082 492 3994.”
Wagpos High School, where Erasmus matriculated in 2021, and Hartbeespoort High School expressed their condolences to the family on Facebook following the tragic incident.
