Heatwave and drought poses critical risk for wildlife
As some parts of South Africa endure a severe heatwave and drought, our wildlife, particularly vultures, faces immense challenges.
With water sources scarce, dehydration poses a critical risk, especially for fledglings leaving the nest for the first time. These inexperienced young birds are the most vulnerable to heat stress, struggling without the endurance and survival skills of mature vultures. Scorching temperatures also put nesting chicks at further risk; when adult vultures leave their nests to seek shelter from the heat, chicks are left exposed and at risk of overheating.
