Kerri up for conservation ‘Nobel’ prize
Kerri Wolter, the founder of VulPro, a vulture conservation organisation in Hartbeespoort, has been nominated for the 2025 Indianapolis Prize, also referred to as the “Nobel Prize” for animal conservation.
Kerri has become a global leader in vulture conservation since she opened the vulture centre in Hartbeespoort over 20 years ago.
The Indianapolis Prize awards $250,000 to an animal conservationist who has achieved major victories in advancing the sustainability of an animal species or group of species. The Prize also awards five DeHaan Finalists and an Emerging Conservationist with $50,000 each. Granted biennially, this award was established to bring the world’s attention to the cause of animal conservation and the brave, talented and dedicated men and women who spend their lives saving the Earth’s endangered animal species.
“I am extremely honoured to be among the world’s top nominated conservationists recognised globally for their role and work in conservation. This nomination is a testament to the entire VulPro team as it truly takes a community to make a difference as no one single person can do it alone. I hope that this nomination brings vultures to the forefront of conservation and their dire situation as one of the fastest declining species globally. As a species that is often overshadowed by the more well-liked and ‘charismatic’ species, this nomination gives hope to a less recognised or appreciated species as it shines a light on them,” Kerri told Kormorant.
Dr. Rob Shumaker, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoo said the nominees for the Indianapolis Prize are true champions of wildlife. “I am honoured to highlight the important achievements of these remarkable individuals through the Indianapolis Prize. These incredible conservationists have shown unmatched dedication, creativity and perseverance in their efforts to protect endangered species and preserve the natural world. From safeguarding vital ecosystems to pioneering innovative solutions, they are true heroes of our planet.”
