Madibeng changes payment system after public concern
Residents recently raised concerns regarding the payment system at Madibeng Municipality’s vehicle licensing offices.
When paying for licensing transactions, motorists had to provide their bank cards to tellers to capture the card number on the licensing system.
With repeated scam warnings by banks to not provide card details and be aware of fraudulent transactions, the system raised red flags for some residents.
“It did not seem safe but we were told that the system required it,” a concerned resident told Kormorant. Another resident said she replaced her card after her card details were entered into the municipal system. Bank fraud is rife and it just does not seem right.”
Upon enquiry about the system, Madibeng spokesperson Tumelo Tshabalala said this week the new system, which was implemented late last year, required a card number.
“However, we have now done away with that requirement and use the alternative number “000” to process the transaction. This has no link to the customer’s card,” Tshabalala said.
