A senior electrician of the Madibeng Municipality is in a very serious condition after a transformer exploded in Brits last week.

Gert Fourie (63) and Steven Nyende were injured when a municipal transformer they were working on exploded on Tuesday last week.
Fourie sustained serious burn wounds to his face and arms and was intubated at the scene before being flown by emergency medical helicopter to Milpark Hospital for specialised care.
He is currently under sedation and connected to a ventilator in Milpark Hospital’s intensive care burn unit. Nyende suffered less serious burn wounds to the face and arms and is being treated at Brits Mediclinic. According to Fourie’s wife, Mariaan, his condition deteriorated this week.
“He is connected to a ventilator due to smoke inhalation as a result of the explosion. They are keeping him sedated to keep him calm,” she said.
“He is in a very good hospital and under the care of a very good doctor. I have to stay positive,” she said.
According to Madibeng councillor Eugene van der Schyff, Nyende was in surgery this week. “We are waiting for an update.”
In the meantime, another substation exploded in Tom Street in Brits over the weekend. Madibeng Fire had to attend to the scene.
Madibeng Municipality did not respond to Kormorant’s enquiries about the explosions or an update on its injured employees.
